This group was originally planned for beginners, but it has already split into two groups: Beginners and Improvers.
Both groups meet in Southwell at the Burgage Close Community Room, which is part of the Burgage Close Community flats situated close to the junction of Burgage Lane with King Street. There is generally parking available on Burgage Lane.
For both groups the emphasis is on maintaining a sociable and supportive ethos where we talk to each other, help each other and enjoy learning and improving together.
Beginners Bridge Our aim is to support people who have recently learned the basics of Acol Bridge and provide them with the opportunity to practise and improve their skills and knowledge. The emphasis is on creating a sociable and encouraging environment where hands can be discussed to enable improving and learning together. You may come as an individual or with a partner. This is for those who have a basic grasp of the Acol bidding system and wish to consolidate their knowledge and improve their play. Leader: Elaine Ackroyd Location: Burgage Close Community Room Time : 1st and 3rd Wednesday, 2-4pm
Improvers Bridge This group is for people who wish to play Bridge in a sociable and supportive environment. It is non-competitive and we encourage discussion of bidding and play to enable members to learn from each other without pressure. This may suit you if you have played Bridge previously and would like to refresh your skills and knowledge. Leader: Elaine Ackroyd Location: Burgage Close Community Room Time : 2nd and 4th Monday, 2-4pm
We currently have as many members as we can accommodate in the room, with the leader and assistant who are experienced players. So there is now a short waiting list. Please contact the group leader, Elaine, if you would like to be added to this list. Priority will be given to current Southwell u3a members.
Members who wish to play Bridge more competitively are encourage to move on to one of the non-u3a Bridge Clubs in Nottinghamshire.
Quiz: Look at the three hands shown below:
What would you open with hand 1?’
Which of your black suits would you open with hand 2?
How would you bid and make a Grand Slam with Hand 3?
Discuss with a friend and see if you agree: Would you go 1 NT for any of these? No perfect right answers ......
