"From the Chair" to Jan 2020

A good read!

Picture
Just finished reading this book. It’s the story of a farm that decided to allow their farm in West Sussex to go back to nature. The results were amazing and some were unexpected. The farm was at Knepp and owned by Isabella Tree and her husband Charlie Burrell. It was facing bankruptcy with traditional farming and they took a brave step. It’s an amazing story. You can also hear Isabella on Desert Island discs talking to Lauren Laverne. (7th January 2020)

Three recent reads I recommend  (Sept 2019)

1. Fifty things that made the modern economy

Title Fifty things that made the modern economy
Author Harford, Tim, 1973-
ISBN 9780349142630
Publication Information London : Abacus, 2018.
Physical Description 343 pages ; 20 cm.
General Note Originally published: London: Little, Brown, 2017.
Summary The global economy defies comprehension. A continuously-changing system of immense complexity, it offers over ten billion distinct products and services, doubles in size every fifteen years and links almost every one of the planet's seven billion people. It delivers astonishing luxury to hundreds of millions. It also leaves hundreds of millions behind, puts tremendous strains on the ecosystem and has an alarming habit of stalling. Nobody is in charge of it. Indeed, no individual understands more than a fraction of what's going on. Tim Harford's book explains where we are, how we got here and where we might end up.

2. The garden jungle, or, Gardening to save the planet

Title The garden jungle, or, Gardening to save the planet
Author Goulson, Dave.
ISBN 9781787331358
Publication Information London : Jonathan Cape, 2019.
Physical Description viii, 280 pages ; 23 cm.
Summary 'The Garden Jungle' is about the wildlife that lives right under our noses, in our gardens and parks, between the gaps in the pavement, and in the soil beneath our feet. Wherever you are right now, the chances are that there are worms, woodlice, centipedes, flies, silverfish, wasps, beetles, mice, shrews and much, much more, quietly living within just a few paces of you. Dave Goulson gives us an insight into the fascinating and sometimes weird lives of these creatures, taking us burrowing into the compost heap, digging under the lawn and diving into the garden pond. He explains how our lives and ultimately the fate of humankind are inextricably intertwined with that of earwigs, bees, lacewings and hoverflies, unappreciated heroes of the natural world.

3. 10-a-day the easy way : fuss-free recipes & simple science to transform your health

Title 10-a-day the easy way : fuss-free recipes & simple science to transform your health
Author Wong, James.
ISBN 9781784724764
Publication Information Mitchell Beazley, 2019.
Physical Description 224p : illustrations ; 260mm. : 905gm.
Summary Eating healthily can be a confusing business. But what if there were a single, simple change you could make that would transform your health, without forcing you to give up the foods you love? According to a growing body of international studies, little tweaks to your everyday diet to get you beyond the 5-a-day minimum and towards 10-a-day could slash your risk of developing the biggest diseases to affect the Western world. In fact, experts agree that simply eating more fruit and veg is the single most important dietary change you can do for your health! As only 3 out of 10 people are even achieving the minimum amount of fruit and veg, this book aims to make getting there easy.
