Longer Walks Group

Picture
The Longer Walks Group is for those with experience of walking 9 to 12 miles, usually in around 5 hours, in all weathers! It is therefore essential for group members to have the appropriate kit, including walking boots/ shoes and waterproofs.

Group members, working in pairs, take their turn at preparing and recce-ing the walks prior to leading them on the day, so some map reading skills are useful. They submit all the details to the group leader for distribution to group members by email

We try not to exceed an hours travelling time to reach the start point and car sharing is encouraged. The walks take place in and around the beautiful countryside of Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire and sometimes into Derbyshire.

They invariably end with a well earned visit to a tea shop!

Review of 2021 Walks

Coronavirus restrictions regarding group walks were eventually lifted in March. Following this we enjoyed 2 local walks from the Leisure Centre, with restricted numbers.
These were followed with walks from Woodborough in May, from Lowdham in June and Caunton in July, still with restricted numbers.
As restrictions eased we began walking slightly further afield and with more members, enjoying a walk in the Vale of Belvoir in August and in 4 villages around Farnsfield in September.
Our plans for a walk from Widmerpool in October were thwarted by the fuel shortage so we returned to the Leisure Centre for another local walk.
Fortunately we are surrounded by a great many public footpaths so each of the local walks we did were very different.
In November we travelled to Cossall for a walk taking in the Erewash Canal:

In December we travelled to Plungar for a walk through Barkestone Woods and over to Harby (see picture below).

Programme for 2022

We don't walk in January but we are putting a programme together for the first Friday in each month, from February to December so "Watch This Space".

Please contact the Group Leader if you’re interested in joining us, or would like more details.

Previous Walks:

Cuckney Walk - 6th March 2020

Mike & Anne Broadley led this walk. It started from Cuckney, taking in Norton, Hazel Gap and Church Warsop. It was a mixture of forest tracks and field walking. The weather couldn’t have been better, not too many few muddy areas. The walk was 10 miles and includes some stretches of the Robin Hood Way.

Most of the photos below were taken at our lunch stop in Church Warsop. The last one is the church at Cuckney.
