The idea of the philosophy group is to enjoy thinking and reflecting together on difficult issues, using the work of major philosophers. We will often generate more questions than answers, but that is half the fun! So far we have either used a podcast or a short pre-prepared written piece to introduce a philosopher, their life and times, and their contribution to a key theme we wish to explore. There then follows a wide-ranging discussion about the issues raised. For example, on the nature of justice and morality.
No previous knowledge of philosophy is required, we will learn about the lives and ideas of some philosophers as we go along. This is a small, but very friendly and supportive group.
During the pandemic we have been meeting monthly on zoom. A recent discussion theme was on art, what it is and it's place in our lives. Currently we are discussing the life and work of Simone de Beauvoir and this will range into a broader discussion of feminism. I will send out details and the link in advance of meetings.
