Southwell U3A poetry group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 2:30pm at a member's home in Farnsfield, with a new theme chosen by the members, who read aloud in turn the poems they have chosen. The themes are wide-ranging, covering different aspects of nature, occupations, emotions, foreign lands and so on. Sometimes the poems read are discussed, but briefly, most of the time being given to simply listening and enjoying the poetry.
Sometimes we are fortunate to have in the group a member who writes their own poetry. This was so with Cynthia Keeping. Whatever the theme, Cynthia found appropriate poems she had written. We have missed her very much since she died. For a while we had no poet in our group, but now another Margaret has joined us, Margaret Royall, and we are looking forward very much to hearing her poetry.
The following two poems, the first by Cynthia and the second by Margaret, are on the same Spring-time theme, but treated very differently, giving a good example of the range of poetic expression we enjoy:
