A chance to play (or learn to play) table tennis at Southwell Leisure Centre. We meet in the Squash Courts between 1 pm and 3pm on Mondays (except bank holidays), and play table tennis for fun.
We welcome new members of all abilities, though are currently "Full" with a short waiting list. If you would like to join us just contact Malcolm, our Group Leader, and he will add you to our short waiting list. If you are not already a member of Southwell U3A you can make your request via the CONTACT US page of this website. If unsure, we can arrange for you to come and have a couple of "taster" sessions at no cost prior to making a commitment to join us, and can even provide you with a bat! The cost is £3.00 per person per session attended to cover the cost of the room hire. We are a relaxed and welcoming social group who enjoy playing table tennis. We usually play doubles table tennis and while we have competitive games our standard is very modest.
You might be interested to know that quite a lot of research has been conducted about table tennis and the over 60s, most especially by King's College, London.
There is evidence to show the game assists blood flow to the brain and stimulates the Hippocampus. It is argued this holds back the symptoms of Alzheimers.
Certainly it is a physical exercise which enhances your attention span and the use of visual and spatial skills. It also helps maintain your hand to eye co-ordination, dexterity and balance.
So all in all it's good for you and fun in the process.
We hear it can even be played sitting down. We must try that sometime!
